Cabaret

Typical Dutch art form, also called 'cabaret'. In a cabaret performance there is room for humorous lyrics and songs. This musical character distinguishes cabaret from British and American standup comedy. Cabaret took off on the basis of Big Three (Wim Sonneveld, Wim Kan and Toon Hermans). In the seventies and eighties, young cabaret artists such as Neerlands Hoop (Freek de Jonge and Bram Vermeulen) and Youp van 't Hek distinguished themselves with socially critical cabaret. Even in the 21st century cabaret remained popular. Hans Teeuwen and Theo Maassen were then the most successful names.
