Bebop

Bebop is the agile big-city music full of complex chords and surprising rhythmic accents that was developed in the early forties during jam sessions at the New York club Minton's Playhouse. The larger orchestras of the swing era gave way to small combos, usually consisting of a rhythm section (drums, bass, piano) and some horns (trumpet, saxophone). The basic rhythm of the swing, with four claps per bar on the bass drum, was moved to the large cymbal, the high-hat got the after-beat and on the rest of the drums and cymbals the most daring accents were given. The chords got many harmonic additions and the chord schemes became more and more complex. No longer the melody of a song, but the complex chord progression became the starting point for improvisations, mostly in a murderous tempo. Partly due to the difficult to hum along melodies and the eccentric behaviour of a number of bop stars, bebop soon ended up in a subculture. Nevertheless, the harmonies and rhythms of bebop can be found in almost all modern jazz styles.
