Downtempo / Lounge

Downtempo is a mix of ambient, triphop and techno, in other words: atmospheric and sometimes downright woolly dance that doesn't immediately draw full dance floors, but is rather played at home. Despite its low danceability, it is still seen as a form of dance, because it uses the same production techniques. Especially in the nineties this music was very popular with Air, Portishead and Massive Attack as important figureheads. Bars and cafes were even opened where the visitor could 'lounge', relax to quiet sounds. When people were sufficiently rested, this hype faded again, but in the underground this music, now often called chill out, is still very popular.
