Concerto Grosso - Divertimento - Cassation - Serenade - Orchestral Suite

The Concerto Grosso is an 18th century concert form, in which a small group of instrumentalists (concertino) is played in concert against the rest of the orchestra (ripieno or concerto grosso). Important were Corelli's Concerti Grossi op.6, published in Amsterdam in 1714. The Concerti Grossi op.6 by Handel are also among the genre's highlights. Not to mention the magnificent Brandenburg Concerts by Bach. A lot of classical orchestral music is stylized dance music. Think, for example, of Bach's Second Suite for orchestra, in which the Overture is followed by: Rondeau, Sarabande, Bourrée I & II, Polonaise, Menuet and the famous Badinerie. In the 18th century the Serenade often sounded in the evening in the open air. In the hands of romantics - Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky - the Serenade developed into fully-fledged concert music.
