Ambient

Instrumental music, usually made with electronic instruments, sometimes supplemented with ambient sounds. The spun-out music wants to have a soothing effect on the listener. The term was coined by Brian Eno, who was looking for a piece of music where you could 'get in and out without missing anything'. The structures of a pop song are therefore missing in ambient. Eno's ambient records from the late seventies are still classics. Besides Brian Eno, German pioneers like Klaus Schülze played an important role. In the nineties 'ambient house' came into being with names like The Orb and the Norwegian producer Biosphere, who once wrote a piece that combined rippling electronics with nature sounds from the polar region. Ambient influenced later genres such as downtempo, lounge and idm/electronics.
