Although a lot of pop music can be called dance music, dance as a genre refers specifically to largely electronic music that is designed to fill the dance floor and focuses on the associated club culture. That culture originated in the discotheques of the sixties and in the following decade it acquired its own soundtrack with the advent of disco music. As a genre indicator, the term dance only became commonplace in the 1980s, when house made its appearance. In the nineties dance was synonymous with eurodance, the electronic top-40 music that was too poppy to continue for house. Eurodance artists like 2 Unlimited, Haddaway and Snap cast influences from rap and house in a good selling pop jacket.
