Gregorian

Gregorian music is one-part vocal music intended for celebrations of the Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian chant probably originated before the eighth century. From the tenth century Gregorian chant was also written down, making it one of the oldest types of music we know in the West. There are different genres of Gregorian chant, depending on what kind of celebration they are sung in. The chants in Mass are relatively long and complicated. Hymns in tidal services (prayer celebrations throughout the day) are usually short or simpler in form. There are thousands of hymns in Gregorian chant, because most melodies are written for certain periods (e.g. Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter) or certain feasts (e.g. All Saints on November 1st and John the Baptist on June 24th). In the course of the Middle Ages more and more feasts arose, as well as new genres in Gregorian chant. Moreover, Gregorian chant formed the basis for experiments with polyphonic music.
